It seems to be a more common question these days as we've seen more and more restaurants and grocery stores pop up with gluten- free items. Most people know it as the ingredient added to dough to make it stretch. It's also added to soups and sauces to make it thicker but, it's so much more than that.
What is Gluten?
This is what Gluten Free Granny had to say about what Gluten is...
Gluten is the protein found in foods processed from wheat and related grains such as rye, barley, spelt, kamut, triticale (a cross between wheat and rye), faro and einkorn.
So is it bad? It can be. Studies have shown more people are emerging with Celiac Disease and gluten sensitivities.
What is Celiac Disease?
Gluten Free Granny also explained what Celiac Disease is, and how to prep for a gluten-free lifestyle.
Celiac Disease is a genetic autoimmune disease that is a permanent intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. The gluten causes damage to the absorptive surface of the small intestine, causing a number of physical symptoms like diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, skin rashes, headaches, joint pains, brain fog, and more.
Stay away from wheat, rye, barley and contaminated oats. What is contaminated oats? Read labels for gluten ingredients. Clean your kitchen out of all gluten products, utensils and appliances that were used for cooking gluten products.
